Tension in Ohafia over murder of 45 year-old man

Palpable fear has gripped
Asaga community in Ohafia Local Government Area Abia State following last
weekend’s communal
disturbances which swept through the area for four days leaving over 13 persons
dead.
However, official reports from the police and the
community said only two persons were killed, with over 40 houses burnt by irate
youths who rampaged the nooks and crannies of the community searching for
alleged evil men and women.
Similarly, 24 of such people were banished from the
community by the youths.
Saturday Independent learnt that trouble which started a
forthnight ago continued till penultimate Saturday.
It was gathered that theyouths were infuriated by the
death of one Nna Mba (45) said to be loved by the community because of his
Jokes.
Nna Mba went from place to place entertaining people
with absurd jokes.
The deceased was allegedly murdered by unknow persons
in the early hours of October 2, for alleged ritual.
Following the startling discovery, youths in the town
allegedly took his corpse to the regent of the town, Chief Okwara Eke-Ebulu
in protest of the killing.
However, the protest soon took a different dimension
as the youths, became violent, destroying the houses and property of people
perceived to be diabolical in the community. Their action was ignited by the
alleged attitude of the traditional ruler who showed indifference to the
gruesome murder.
They were said to have hired one Uduma, a native
doctor from Afikpo in Ebonyi State who came to the community and fingered a
number of persons as not only having a hand in the murder of the victim but
responsible for the vices committed in the town. These people, they claimed,
were already known by every member of the community as “evil men and
women.”
No sooner than the identification parade ended than
the youths, reportedly went on rampage destroying houses and properties of perceived enemies.
