Last Updated: Saturday, October 23rd, 2004 HOME | Previous Page FG to meet 80 per cent water need by 2007 The Federal Government will provide 80 per cent of the country's water requirement by the year 2007, Water Resources Minister, Muhktar Shagari, has said. Shagari made this known on Thursday in Abuja when the Ambassador of the Republic of Syria in Nigeria, Haitham H. Sa’ad, paid him a courtesy visit. The minister said that adequate water supply would alleviate poverty through agricultural production. Shagari said that the two countries would soon embark on exchange programmes for technical experts and training in agricultural production. Earlier, the ambassador had commended the federal government's effort to solve the country's water supply and irrigation problem. The ambassador further discussed joint efforts between Nigeria and Syria on irrigation and rural water supply. According to him, ``water supply and irrigation are veritable ways of improving the standard of  living among the rural dwellers.''
