Last Updated: Saturday, October 23rd, 2004 HOME | Previous Page Two men arrested for attempt to defraud Okonjo-Iweala Two men who attempted to defraud the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, have been arrested. A reliable source at the ministry said in Abuja that the men were arrested at the minister's office while trying to secure a contract. They had claimed they were sent by former military president, Ibrahim Babaginda to collect a multi-million naira contract from the minister. The two well-dressed fraudsters (names withheld), who claimed they were from Nasarawa, had earlier telephoned Okonjo-Iweala on her handset and booked an appointment to see her. According to the source, when the two men arrived at the ministry this morning, they were ushered into the minister's waiting room. However, unknown to them Okonjo-Iweala telephoned Babaginda to enquire about the men and was informed that they were unknown to him. She quickly called the DG, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who dispatched  detectives to arrest the two men.
