Defence Minister, Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso
has been ordered by the state Judicial Commission of Inquiry investigating his
activities as state governor from 1999 to May 28, 2003 to appear before it on
October 26.
The order was given on Thursday by the chairman of
the commission, Justice A.T Badamosi. He said the order became necessary
following the attitude of the former
State governor to the probe, stressing that the
defence minister had avoided all the commission’s correspondences.
Justice Badamosi who frowned at Kwankwaso’s
approach to the development said, “he must appear before it on Tuesday to
answer corrupt charges against him.
“It is on record that before this commission
adjourned, the former governor was
served with a summon, however, we
received a letter from his counsel for a suitable date for his appearance which
the commission obliged,” said the judge.
According to him, to the dismay of the commission,
few days after, it received a letter from an Abuja Federal High Court as well
as another from Kano restraining the commission from further action against
Kwankwaso.
However, following the court ruling which lifted the earlier restriction
for his appearance, the commission is now compelled to serve the former
governor through a substitute service.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Mr. M.L Ibrahim,
had told the commission that, after the court’s ruling which lifted the
restriction on Kwankwaso’s appearance, he wrote a letter to him
intimating Kwankwaso of the court’s ruling as well as serving him a fresh
summon.
Kano State government had in August last year, set up a
commission of inquiry to investigate activities of the former PDP led
government with Kwankwaso as the governor between May 29, 1999 to May 28 ,
2003.
