Executive Director of Lawyers League for Human Rights (LLHR), a non-governmental oragnisation Mr. Jiti Ogunye, has condemned the role
played by the police in the recent assault drama in the Senate.
According to Ogunye, policeman at the scene of the
incident rather than act immediately, looked the other way as Senator Mohammed
carried out the assault.
Said he, “it is unfortunate that policemen that
were posted to the National Assembly and those who serve as security details to
these senators did nothing during the attack.
“They did not understand their primary duty. I
dare say that before their secondary responsibility of protecting these
functionaries they are primarily posted to enforce law and order.”
Ogunye said that Section 10 of the Criminal Act gives the police wide powers to
arrest without warrant when an offence is about to be committed, is being
committed or has been committed.
“On the day of the incident, I presume there
were several policemen, but they were all looking at the drama.
Section 4 of the police Act also gives police
officers wide powers to arrest on
such occasion. The policemen that were there failed to carry out their duty
there and then. What that means is that if a senator should take a gun and
shoot someone in the presence of his police orderly, it is possible that the
senator can go on a shooting spree and then end up committing suicide,”
he said.
Ogunye, however, commended the media for their
efforts at reporting the incidence promptly, even as he expressed doubts that the leadership of
the upper legislative house might not have taken the stand it took if the incidence had not been widely reported.
“I thank the media for ensuring that this issue
is kept in the front burner and not swept under the carpet.
“They made it possible for Nigerians to know of that
incidence. It is doubtful whether the Senate could have suspended Senator Mohammed if not for that wide
publicity, “he added.
