Oshiomhole, others to resign from panel

As the government     refuses to revert the fuel price, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, and other members of the labour and the civil society groups in the palliative committee set up by the federal government in the wake of the recent nationwide strike to protest fuel price hike may soon prepare for another round of strike.

The National Auditor of the NLC, Mr. Bright Anokwuru and the General-Secretary of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Chief John Kolawole, have given indications to this move.

Speaking in an interview, Anokwuru maintained that the committee was not aimed at achieving any tangible result and that labour and  civil society groups have asked their members to quit the committee.

“ The committee can’t solve the problem. It is just a diversionary step by the Federal Government. Adams Oshiomhole has been asked to disengage from it “, he said.

Kolawole explained that the stand of the coalition on the fuel price remains unchanged and that since the government had refused to show any sign of reverting to the old price, the members on the committee may have to be recalled.

Said he: “The first thing in the agenda of the committee from the labour angle is that the government should revert to the old price, failure to do so we will pull out and take our action”.

The NLC called off its four-day warning strike on October 14 and issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to revert the fuel price to the pre-September 23 price.

With the count down to the ultimatum approaching, the labour community has started moves for another round of strike. A meeting of the Labour community is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
