Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari, Speaker, House
of Representatives
“I will
personally take up the issue with the leadership of the Senate to ensure that
sanctions are imposed on the senator. Mohammed’s action is a serious
indictment on the National Assembly. It is unbecoming of a senator to slap his
colleague even in the chamber of the National Assembly not to talk of outside
the chambers in the full glare of the public”.
•Senator Tawar Wada Chairman,
Senate Committee on Information.
“ TheSenate was aware of Mohammed’s
apology butas a body, it is
expected to be a paragon of virtue and we regret the act. The Senate,
therefore, in consideration of the circumstances of all that took place, the
gravity of the offence, the unreserved apology from Senator Isa Mohammed and
the remorse shown by him, as well as concern shown by the entire people of
Niger State, for the unity of this country.
“All
citizens of the country, no matter where they are, are expected to show a sign
of responsibility any day, anytime hence the senate passed the resolution to
suspend Senator Isa Mohammed for two weeks. I believe that is going to act as a
deterrent to all other senators.
•An annonymous ex-senator,
“It is an
embarrassing thing for this country that honorable members of the National
Assembly would be assaulting one another in full public glare. On no account
should Senator Mohammed have assaulted Senator Anisulowo. There are channels
though which such issues should be addressed in the National Assembly; a
senator is not expected to take the laws into his hands.
Senators are
distinguished people, they are the ones that make the law and should not turn
around to break the laws that they make. I learnt that Senator Mohammed had
been having problems with the other senator before that day. In fact, he had
stopped attending committee meetings, probably that was why he did not know how
the money was spent.
“But you
cannot just accost your committee chairman outside the Assembly Chambers and
demand to know how money is spent; even if there were no prior quarrel, the
thinking was a wrong one, things ought to be done orderly.”
•Serving senator representing one
of the Southern States
“I condemn
in totality, the behaviour of Senator Isa Mohammed. The senator has brought the
image of the entire National Assembly to disrepute. The fact that a woman is involved has made the issue more
serious. I support a call for the removal of Senator Mohammed
“After
slapping her, he was held back and restrained by some distinguished colleagues
of his who were at the scene. Does it mean that if they had not held him back,
he would have gone ahead to beat her up the more? His action is not only
dishonorable but a disgrace and a shame to all men. No matter the level of
provocation, he shouldn’t have slapped her. No real man would lay a finger
on a woman. A man who slaps a woman is only demontrating that he is not in tune
with urbane conducts and is therefore not fit for the hallowed office of a
distinguished senator. It is a shame and a slap on the entire nation.
Some of us do not
know why we are here. How can a senator slap another over a disagreement and
tomorrow, everybody will say Obasanjo is crude and disrespectful to people. But
at least, he has not slapped anyone yet.
“I am very
satisfied with the decision the senate took on the matter, and so, I will urge
that the mater should not be overflogged .
•Another annonymous respondent
“Isa
Mohammed has apologised and his apology has been duly accepted by both Senator
Anisulowo and the leadership of the house, and the whole Senate is pleased with it; we are one family
again”.
•Sadatu SaniChairman of the House Committee on
Women Affairs.
“The women
folk find it difficult to condone the action of Senator IsaMohammed. A bill on
violence against women had been presented to the National Assembly and I wonder
why a lawmaker of Mohammed’s standing should indulge in such a
disgraceful act.
“Nigeria is
a signatory to the International Convention on elimination of all forms of
discrimination against women and, lawmakers ought to champion the crusade
instead of perpetrating the act themselves.
“In the
light of the events of the last few days, we say that this cannot be condoned
and such act of uncivil behaviuor must be censored and heavily sanctioned
whether in the assembly or elsewhere.
“It is time
the code of conduct for members of the National Assembly came out so that this
type of incident would not repeat itself.”
•Tanko Ibeji State Secretary, PDP, Niger
State.
“The party was ashamed of the action of the senator
and was indeed considering disciplinary measures that would ensure that such an
act did not repeat itself.
“Indeed we
are stunned by the actions of the senator and are ready to do everything within
the constitution of the party to stem the tide of such misbehavior in future.
“We condemn
the action of the senator and I can assure you that we dissociate ourselves
from such shameful behavior aimed at portraying people from this state in the
wrong light.
“Mohammed
by the act did not seem to have any respect for due process and the party
reforms which the PDP controlled government was trying to handle.”
•Jikantoro, Speaker, Niger State House of Assembly.
“ The state
government was saddened by the action of the senator and joins all decent and
well-meaning Nigerians in condemning Senator Isa Mohammed regardless of what
might have precipitated that kind of abominable act.
“The incident will be further
investigated and the senator will be duelly called to order “.
