Federal Character policy not productive - Igbinedion

By Benson Agwu

Correspondent, Benin City

Edo State Governor Lucky Igbinedion has argued that the Federal Character Commission (FCC) is an unnecessary measure in the determination and allocation of resources in the Nigerian polity. According to him, it is counter-productive as it promotes mediocrity and suppresses competence in the system.

Speaking in his office when the Federal Commissioner representing Edo State at the FCC, Mr. Emmanuel Idehen, paid him a courtesy visit, Igbinedion said: “I am not in support of the commission’s existence. I hope the country will soon come to a stage where emphasis would be on competence rather than discriminatory policies being promoted by the Federal Character Commission.”

Igbinedion cited the country’s poor showing at the recent Olympic Games, which he said could be traced to the obnoxious content of federal character representation.

He said that human development vis-à-vis national growth would remain retrogressive if the prevailing parochial, geographical and religious biases were not eliminated.

He added that his administration would continue to promote ideals that ensure equity in the spread of developmental projects to all areas as well as appointment of individuals to positions of authority.

Earlier, Idehen said his visit was to intimate the governor with his appointment as a commissioner representing the state at the commission. He praised the governor for providing development for the people at the ward, local government and senatorial levels.
