FCT workers threaten strike over retrenchment By Abdullahi M. Gulloma Workers of the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (MFCT), under the aegis of Coalition of Industrial Unions, have given the FCT minister, Malam Nasir Ahmed el-Rufai, a 14-day ultimatum to halt the planned retrenchment in the ministry, or face an indefinite strike. In a letter addressed to the minister, the workers also called for monetisation as well as their 11 months salary arrears. The letter signed by the chairman of the coalition, Comrade Abdullahi Yahaya and Comrade Silas G. Adamu, urged the minister to reverse the recent restructuring of all departments from the main Ministry to the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA). The workers also called for the setting up of a machinery to redefine government-labour relations, whi-ch according to them, was battered since the arrival of the minister. “We demand the immediate release of monies for the payment of all other arrears owed workers such as promotion increase, annual increment, teaching allowances and uniform allowances for nurses and health personnel. “We also demand the immediate release of the list of beneficiaries of the Industrial Arbitration Panel (IAP) award approved for health workers since July 2003, as well as the constitution of management boards for the FCDA, AEPB, water board and the sports council, in order to define the status of employment of workers in such boards and agencies,” the workers demanded.
