The federal government has began moves to review and revamp the National Health Insurance Scheme just as it dissolved the Yayale-led committee of public sector implementation of the scheme.
Investigations revealed that Alhaji Yayale Ahmed the Head Of Service, who was heading an implementation committee for the introduction of the scheme in ministries has been asked to hand over the chairmanship to Prof Eyitayo Lambo, Minister of Health.
Daily Trust gathered that the move was informed by the presidency’s concern over delays in the commencement of the scheme for civil servants and the desire to use the scheme as part of measures aimed at cushioning the effect of the consistent fuel price hike.
Our correspondent gathered that a special stakeholders and high-level meeting chaired by President Obasanjo himself was held last week on the scheme where it was decided that there was need to commence the public sector scheme before December.
The Minister of Health, Prof Lambo, confirmed this at the weekend when he told reporters that the scheme will soon be re-launched and that a major review of the implementation of bottlenecks was going on.
According to him, the scheme has been on the drawing board for over 42 years and the committee reviewing it is to look at the issues which have made it impossible for mainly workers to begin benefiting from the scheme.
Prof Lambo said the insurance scheme will provide improved funding for the health sector as it has become a major means of generating funding for the health sector in many parts of the country.
The National Health Insurance scheme, at the beginning of the year commenced registration of civil servants for the scheme.
