Family of
the slain Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, has
expressed disenchantment over the conclusion of the trial of Iges
murder.
In a
statement jointly signed by Mrs. Funso Adegbola, Messrs. Muyiwa Ige and
Dele Ige, the family said despite their wish to ignore issues about the
botched prosecution of the suspected assailants of their patriarch, they
were prompted by the comments of the Oyo State Attorney-General, including
his recent disclosure that the case was not closed and that investigations
would continue.
The family
said if the attorney-general had failed to address pertinent questions
like whether or not the investigations would include the released
suspects, the appropriate action to keep options open in a criminal matter
is to file a nolle prosequi.
It is also
elementary law that a person cannot be charged twice for an offence for
which he has been acquitted and discharged, they said.
The family
criticised the dispensation of justice, especially in the case concerning
the brutal murder, three years ago, of its patriarch, saying, We knew
that justice has not been dispensed diligently.
It urged
that the attorney-general kept his counsel, and refrained from treating
us and the general public as though we are fools or ignorant.
It also
queried how a law officer, who made a selective decision in entering a
nolle prosequi for some of the accused persons after the case had closed,
allowing the rest to face the music, could be taken seriously about
renewing investigations on the matter.
Why has he not appealed the
decision in the court? Has he forgotten his attempt to take over the case
when the late Chief Debo Akande was absent during the hearing? the family
asked.
