Sack Abana, Obi tells INEC, Wabara

By Paul Mumeh

and Adetutu Folasade-koyi Abuja

For the umpteenth time, Anambra central senatorial contender, Chief Ben Obi has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the President of the Senate, Chief Adolphus Wabara, to sack Senator Ikechukwu Abana from the upper house and return the position to him.

Obi, who was last week declared the rightful winner of the April 2003 senatorial election by the supreme court, in a fresh petition to INEC and the senate president contended that Abana has no mandate to be in the senate anymore.

By a unanimous decision I won Abana at the Anambra election petition tribunal, Awka, at the Appeal in Enugu,I won and at the supreme court I was declared victorious, where else can Abana go? Obi queried.

In the petition prepared by his counsel, chief Clement Akpamgbo (SAN), Obi told the Dr. Abel Guobadia led INEC to issue him certificate of return as the elected candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District.

He said Abanas continued occupation of the seat amounted to a stolen mandate and a violation of the laws of the land which he argued as capable of undermining the letters and spirit of democracy in the country.

Specifically, Obi pleaded with Wabara as the head of the highest law making institution in Nigeria not to compromise the situation by allowing Abana to attend plenary sessions of the senate.

Wabara had in response to Obis previous petitions said he cannot act in a vacuum without a certificate of return from INEC, promising to swear in Obi once the certificate of return is issued.

However, Abana has vowed not to vacate the seat claiming that he enjoys the mandate of the electorate in Anambra central zone.
