The police in Imo State have
sworn to apprehend the thugs that torched the house of a councillor at
Isiala Mbano area during weekends bye-election to pick a replacement for
the late House of Representatives member, Maurice Ibekwe (Okigwe
North).
Eyewitnesses said the
councillor on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was said
to be busy trying to ensure victory for his party when people suspected to
be thugs invaded his residence, over powered his family and torched the
house.
Property said to be worth
thousands of naira were destroyed in the inferno, apart from those looted
by the rampaging thugs who threatened to kill anyone that tried to stop
them.
At the arrival of the police,
the thugs reportedly fled and they have vowed to comb the area with a view
to finding the culprits.
It was gathered that the
councillor represents the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance
(APGA) who is from the same ward as the senator representing Okigwe
zone.
Speaking with journalists
after going to see the burnt house, Senator Ifeanyi Araraume decried the
resort to the use of thugs that ought to have become a thing of the past
in Nigerian elections.
He said his decision to back
the candidate of the PDP was because the party has done so much for the
zone and that it would be suicidal to vote in another party.
He said, The PDP government
at the federal level has done so much for the zone. We have several road
projects that would be completed before the end of this year. We also have
the regional water scheme which Mr. President would commission anytime he
comes to Imo State.
Meanwhile, the PDP candidate
for the election, Mike Ohia polled a total of 112,247 votes to defeat his
APGA candidate, Godson Offoaro who got 5,712 votes.
The Resident Electoral
Commissioner for the state, Moses Ogbe said the election was free and fair
and without any incident known to him.
