South East Senators, Ngige meet

By Okey Maduforo

Correspondent, Awka

Senators from five states in the South East have begun more spirited moves aimed at fashioning out strategies for the realisation of an Igbo president in 2007. The lawmakers have been holding closed-door meetings with other political leaders since last week in Abuja and their in thier various states.

At one of such meetings, the posters of Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige for president in 2007 were freely distributed. The posters are now a common feature in Awka. The governor has, however, denied knowledge of the posters.

At the weekend, Senators Emma Anosike, Ike Ekweremadu, Uche Chukwumerije, Chris Adijije arrived Awka from Abia State in a convoy along with some chieftains of the Ohaneze Ndi Igbo and held a brief closed-door meeting with some traditional rulers. After their meeting, they all visited Ngige. They declined to give a hint of their mission or discussions, but a source said they were there to sound the governor out if he has a presidential ambition or is desirous of sponsoring or nominating anyone for the post.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to Ngige on Media and Publicity, Mr Fred Chukwuelobe, he said Although the governor is eminently qualified to hold the exalted office, he is currently busy working for Anambra State and has no time to be talking about a far fetched ambition.

Chukwuelobe urged those posting the posters to channel their energy and resources to more positive ventures. He warned them to desist.
