The contract for the
rehabilitation of Ido-Osun air strip awarded to an Osun State based
company (names withheld) has been revoked by the federal
government.
The Minister of Aviation,
Alhaji Issa Yuguda gave the order when the Osun State governor, Olagunsoye
Oyinlola paid him courtesy visit in Abuja.
The state government had
earlier petitioned the ministry of aviation over the non-performance of
the contractor.
The minister noted that the
contractor had been given a sum of N10 million for the job before
abandoning the project.
Alhaji Yuguda added that he
has directed the legal department of the ministry to recover the amount
already paid to the contractor as well as taking all other necessary
action against the contractor.
Meanwhile, engineers from the
ministry have taken over the renovation of the Ido-Osun air strip with a
view to up-grading the facilities.
President Olusegun Obasanjo
had during his official visit to Osun State promised to renovate the air
strip.
The air strip which has been
abandoned since 1995, according to Governor Olagunsoye, will commence
operations before the end of the first quarters of 2005.
He said, since the aviation
ministry has taken over the renovation of the air strip, the project will
be completed soon.
The Aviation ministry has
started work on essential technical equipment for the take off of the air
strip; installation of automatic weather station, synoptic reporting
station and non-directional beacon navigational aids as well as the
control tower radio, he said.
Oyinlola added that the state
government would on its own part, construct a new run-way and control
tower to facilitate landing and take-off of various sizes of aircraft from
the upgraded facility.
He noted that the step was
part of the state governments effort at ensuring rapid industrial and
social development of Osun State, adding that the air-strip if completed
will facilitate tourism as a lot of foreigners would prefer to land at
their point of visitation rather than travel hundreds of kilometers by
road after landing in Lagos or Abuja.
