    PDP retains ibekwe’s seat

    EMMA OGU, Owerri

RULING Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday again proved its mettle in Imo State by winning the bye-election for Okigwe North federal constituency seat.

The party’s candidate, Chief Mike Ohia, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which released the results of the poll yesterday, secured 112,247 votes to beat his opponent, Dr. Godson Offoaro of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) who got 5,712 votes.

The seat became vacant following the death of re-elected Chief Maurice Ibekwe of the PDP, in detention while facing trial on advance fee fraud (a.k.a 419) charges early this year.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, Chief Moses Ogbe, while announcing the results, said the election was free and fair and devoid of violence.

But APGA has cried foul over the conduct of the election. In an interview with Daily Champion shortly after the announcement of the result, former state chairman of APGA, Chief Benjy Duru said that there was no election in Okigwe North constituency.

He alleged that election materials were distributed last Friday without any APGA representative around insisting that INEC is yet to conduct real election for the Okigwe North seat.

In his own reaction, acting state chairman of the PDP, Dr. Eddy Anyanwu hailed the conduct of the election and described the victory of the party as a landslide one.

He also commended Gov. Achike Udenwa for what he described as the tight security during the election which made the entire exercise hitch-free.
