LAGOS — Ijaw women resident in Lagos, last weekend, honoured some Ijaw sons and daughters that have contributed to the development of their people through business, politics, academics and other spheres of life. The occasion put together by Izon Ebilade Ogbo of Lagos to mark their 10th year anniversary and the installation of a new patron for the organisation was chaired by former Petroleum Minister Chief Dan Etete represented by Chief Kenneth Etete.
In her address, president of the organisation, Mrs Adigha Odili urged Ijaw all over the world to close ranks to save the ethnic group from perpetual oppression. According to her, the large turn-out of people for the ceremony was an indication that the Ijaw were ready for unity to face the challenges ahead.
She lamented the alleged marginalisation of Ijaw since independence, including the alleged seizure of the licence of Malabo oil block by the Obasanjo administration, stating that it was meant to punish the Ijaw which will continue to prolong the crisis in the region.
The special guest of honour, Alhaji Dokubo Asari who stormed the venue with other activists from Port Harcourt urged the Ijaw to continue to insist on self-determination, resource control and the convocation of a sovereign national conference.
Comrade Joseph Evah, Coordinator of the Ijaw Monitoring Group whose installation rites as the new patron of the organisation added colour to the event, said he accepted to be the new patron after the women agreed to his conditions that they are prepared to sacrifice time, energy and money for the less-privileged in Ijaw society.
Comrade Evah, former Publicly Secretary of Ijaw National Congress (INC) urged the Ijaw to learn from the secret of other people’s greatness.

Abidde Aprezi (rtd); Hon. Temi Brisibe; Chief .A.K. Horsfal and Mr. Mike Zoukumor among others.
