Barely one month after a highly successful Igbo Day celebration
in Owerri where critical attention was drawn to issues affecting
their collective interest in Nigeria, the Igbos have concluded
arrangements for a major retreat in Asaba, the capital of
Delta State.
The event which is a brain child of Aka Ikenga, the intellectual
arm of Ohaneze, Daily Sun gathered, will serve as a forum
for Ndigbo to mull over their plight in Nigeria and draw a
new road map for renaissance.
President of Aka Ikenga, Chief Chris Asoluka explained that
the retreat, which will take place in Grand Hotel Asaba, offers
an opportunity to Igbo sons and daughters to take a cold,
dispassionate look at the peculiar challenges facing the Igbo
nation in the 21st Century. According to him, the retreat
is an opportunity for the Igbos to "think through the
peculiar intra-ethnic dynamics propelling the Ndigbo of Nigeria
today and then discuss, dispassionately, how it fits into
the Igbo road map and the challenge of remaining a relevant
constituency of the federating units of the 21st Century Nigeria".
Asoluka was however emphatic about the nature of the retreat,
describing it as non-partisan but not apolitical. "This
would be a non-partisan event to be characterised by mental
output, focused presentations and select breakout sessions.
It is not a political summit’, he warned, maintaining
that issues would be handled with dispatch at the retreat.
The Igbo leader further explained that measures have been
taken to ensure that the event, which is collaborative effort
between Aka Ikenga and Ohaneze does not turn into a forum
for bellyaching and high-sounding. "Great effort will
be expended to ensure that this retreat brings a fresh breath
of perspective, including intellectual rigour and pragmatism
on the issues," he explained.
Asoluka who is also a chieftain of Ohaneze revealed that the
renowned US based robotics engineer, Prof. Barth Nnaji shall
deliver the keynote speech at the retreat under the theme:
Njikoka: A Search for Fresh Standards.
