Last Updated: Wednesday, October 27th, 2004 HOME | Previous Page FG votes N20b to rehabilitate barracks   By Godwin Egbara Correspondent, Bauchi   Some N20 billion has been set aside from excess oil earnings by the government to rehabilitate military and police barracks nationwide, according to House of Representatives Defence Committee Chairman Oluwole Oke. An additional N2 billion is reserved to revamp more structures in the barracks before the end of the year. The committee has visited Kaduna, Kano and Plateau States to assess the progress of work in the barracks and Oke expressed satisfaction with the quality of work so far carried out. He said some years ago when the committee made similar visits to the barracks, their conditions were pitiable as the buildings were not fit for human habitation. He commended President Olusegun Obasanjo for the prompt release of funds to rehabilitate them, stressing that the new condition of the barracks is a clear testimony of the dividends of democracy. Justifying the tour, Oke said it has afforded lawmakers an opportunity to assess the performance of the Presidential Committee on the Rehabilitation of Military Barracks. He later led the committee members to visit Bauchi State Governor Adamu Mu’azu, whom he applauded for extending the gains of democracy to the people of the state. Mu’azu explained that his administration acknowledges the role of the Ministry of Defence and would do its best to improve the living standards of the citizens.   Copyright� 2004.
