OAU students hold VC, others hostage

By Gbenga Faturoti,

Special Correspondent, Osogbo

Vice chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Professor Roger Makanjuola and nine other key officers of the institution were on Tuesday held hostage for about six hours by officials of the institution’s Students Union.

The incident took place at the institution’s Senate Building when the management of the university were conducting interview for various candidates who applied for the post of principal of the institution’s staff school.

Officials of the students Union, it was gathered, were protesting the suspension for two academic sessions, of two executives of the Union by the management. Those held along with the vice chancellor included the deputy vice chancellor (Admin), Bursar, Registrar, and Deans.

The affected students, Taiwo Hassan and Peter Olowokande, Welfare Officer and Public Relations officer (PRO) respectively were suspended for allegedly disrupting the last registration exercise and engaging in disgraceful acts of intimidating and harassing students and their parents during the registration exercise.

The student’s union government allegedly took the step to protest against the newly introduced departmental charges, which resulted in the suspension of the two students.

All efforts of the vice-chancellor and the principal staff of the institution to dissuade the angry students from the act fell on their deaf ear.

Two of the candidates who came for the interview also suffered the same faith in the hand of the students.

After much pressure on the management to rescind its decision on the suspended students without success, the student Union leaders later freed the officers who looked visibly ruffled.
