CFTU asks police to begin serious investigation of  Agbeyegbe's death

By Victor Ahiuma-Young and Kemi Odesami
Wednesday, October 27, 2004

LAGOS—As controversy continues to becloud the murder and police investigation of late Aviation activist, Captain Jerry   Agbeyegbe, Congress of Free Trade Unions of Nigeria (CFTU), has challenged the police to begin a serious and purposeful   investigation of the dastardly act and not to resort to cheap blackmail as cover up.

A statement by CFTU’s General Secretary, Comrade Didi Adodo advised the security agencies not to allow the gruesome   murder of Captain Agbeyegbe to end up like that of Chief Bola Ige, Harry Marshal, Aminasori Dikkibo and a host of others.

The statement  said:
“Since Captain Jerry Agbeyegbe was mowed down in cold blood by assassins’ bullets on Tuesday, 11th October 2004 we   have watched with bated breath how the Nigerian police have been handling the investigation, with corollary theatrics to fish out   the killers of the deceased flight captain. We are not surprised that the police have not been able to ferret out Capt.   Agbeyegbe’s  killers because of the unedifying record of the police not to have ever arrested perpetrators of such high profile   killings in the past. But we are alarmed that instead of the police doing their job they resorted to cheap blackmail.”

According to the statement: “No wonder well meaning and concerned Nigerians have concluded that the police may eventually   not be able to arrest the killers, but would rather frame up some innocent people as assassins of Capt. Agbeyegbe. We at   CFTU would not want the gruesome murder of Capt. Agbeyegbe to end up like that of Chief Bola Ige, Harry Marshal,   Aminasori Dikibo and a host of  others. Nigerians deserve to know those behind the spate of these blood-curdling murders.

"Late Capt. Agbeyegbe did not deserve to be killed like a hapless fowl. He fought for workers in his industry as a trade unionist   of note when he was president of NAAPE (National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers), especially the unbridled   sacking of professionals in the aviation industry.

“The police should do their work and help to stop the bad image of the country in the international community through their   conducts. They have the capacity to fish out the culprits.

"The government of President Olusegun Obasanjo should put all the resources at its disposal to bring the  killers of our late   Comrade to book, and stop its agencies from the double speak, cheap blackmail, deliberate distortion of facts and chasing   shadows,” the statement added.
