KADUNA — SULTAN of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to defer its planned nationwide strike action over increase in petroleum prices because of Muslims who are now fasting. Maccido who is also the President-General of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) made the plea in a statement signed on his behalf by Mallam Muhammad Suleiman. The Muslim Leader said that the strike should be deferred until after the Muslim Radmadan. He had earlier opposed last week’’s four-day warning strike, which paralysed economic activities in the country.
According to the Sultan, any further strike in the country would result to added burden on the Muslim ummarh whom he alleged had suffered so much during the last strike spear headed by the NLC. ““On behalf of the JNI, the Sultan of Sokoto, the President-General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam and the entire Muslim ummarh of this country, the organization is appealing to the NLC to defer its next proposed strike action after the month of Ramadan. “This is because, the Muslims have suffered the advent of last strike and to go on another strike on this month will put more burden on the Ummarh” the Sultan stated. However, labour leaders who reacted to the Sultan’’s statement told Vanguard accused the Muslim Leader of working in tandem with the Federal Government to undermine the efforts of the NLC and other civil society groups to embark on two previous strikes.
They stated that Sultan Maccido had “been very protective of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s government even after he had openly criticized the latest increase in prices of petroleum products. “The Sultan should also bear in mind, the hardship which this fuel increase had put the Muslim ummarhs. This latest appeal is aimed at dividing the ranks of labour. We expect the Sultan to bear in mind the interest of Muslims and non-Muslims at the same time.
