Police arrest man in possession of 2,000 live bullets

Wednesday, October 27, 2004

AWKA — THE police in Anambra have arrested a 29 year-old man, for being in possession of some 2,000 live bullets in   Onitsha. The state police command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Kolapo Shofoluwe, told newsmen in Awka on Monday,   while parading the suspect, that he was apprehended on Monday morning when he came down from a commercial bus.

Shofoluwe said when Okonkwo alighted from the bus with some packages of live ammunition sealed in sacks and some stocked   in his dress, a police patrol team suspected his movement and invited him for a search. The spokesman added that on sighting   the police, Okonkwo tried to run but the weight of the ammunition, estimated at 70 kg, did not allow him.

He also said that Okonkwo supplied ammunition to some undisclosed persons at the Onitsha main market. Okonkwo,   however, told reporters that he had been in the business for more than six years and that he brought the ammunition from Ghana.

He explained that he served a licensed ammunition dealer for six years but after being paid off after his tutelage, he started his   own business without a licence. The suspect, who claims to hail from Dunukofia council area in Anambra, said he made an   average of N15,000 profit per trip.
