Plateau begins poverty alleviation drive
From Bosede Ojo, Jos
TO sustain the peace process and reduce poverty level, the Plateau State government is embarking on an economic empowerment and development programmes (PLASEEDS).
The event, which was held on Monday at the Azi Nyako Youth Centre in Jos, is titled: "State Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (SEEDS)"
The Chairman of the state planning committee of SEEDS, Hajiya Fati Kyari, said the programme is aimed at poverty reduction, wealth creation and employment generation in Nigeria and in Plateau State.
Hajiya Kyari said the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS), which was created at the federal level cannot succeed if it is implemented at the federal level alone since a lot of the national resources are at the state and local council levels.
Plateau State has, therefore, agreed to develop and implement their state economic empower and development programme while the local councils have agreed to develop and implement the Local Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy known as LEEDS.
Hajiya Kyari said each tier of government will now develop its reform agenda in line with its peculiarities and development needs.
She said youth restiveness and violence in the society stem from poverty and unemployment in the country.
According to her, for permanent peace to prevail, there is the need for a drastic reform of the economy, which can be achieved through SEEDS.
The guest speaker on the occasion, Senator Timothy Adudu, stressed the need for more attention on the people at the grassroots.
The Senator, who was represented by the Chairman of the Jos-South Local Council, J. D Harana, said adequate plan was required for the people to actually feel the impact of SEEDS in their lives.
According to him, with a programme like SEEDS in Plateau State, poverty will die, people will establish big businesses and employment will be on the increase.
