Customs collects N238b in nine months

IN nine months, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has raked in N238,427 billion into the Federal Government's coffers, according to the agency's revenue profile obtained yesterday by The Guardian in Abuja.
Of the amount, the sum of N141,857,295,219.97 was realised from imports while N12,523,080,479.99 was collected from excise duties. Auction; licence and penalties fees amounted to N2,144,800,936.34.
A breakdown of the collection shows that the highest amount of N30.876 billion was raked in by the NCS last September followed closely by the N29.876 billion in the preceding month of August and N29.243 billion in March this year.
The summary further indicates that the sum of N26.528 billion was collected by the agency in July, while the months of January; April and May this year recorded about N25 billion each. In the month of June, the sum of N24.585 billion was realised while February recorded the least collection of N21.840 billion. .
The summary also indicated that under the same period NCS generated and paid to the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) the sum of N10,756,358,047.23 under the seven per cent port levy charges. Another N597,150,678.71 to the Nigeria sugar Development Council under the 10 per cent Sugar Development levy while the sum of N1,732,290,897.74 was paid to the National Automotive Council (NAC) for the development of local automobile technology from the two per cent NAC levy.
The NCS also generated and paid to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) during the period, about N50,851,748,791.48 being the five per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) deduction of its collections with another sum of N10,056,962,311.32 paid to pre-shipment inspectors under the one per cent Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme (CISS) levy.
The sum of N2,031,581,995.52 has equally been generated and paid to the Federal Ministry of
Agriculture for the development of indigenous rice production under the 10 per cent rice levy and another N5,875,969,712.17 to the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) 0.5 per cent levy meant to encourage sub-regional trade.
