Ohanaeze holds retreat on Igbo future
By Kodilinye Obiagwu
BARELY a month after it organised the Igbo Day celebration, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo in conjunction with the Aka-Ikenga, the think-tank and intellectual arm of Ndigbo, will hold the maiden edition of their joint retreat in Asaba, Delta State at the weekend.
The retreat with the theme "Njikoka: A Search for Fresh Standards", is to prepare the ground for the December summit of Ohanaeze.
According to the organisers, the retreat is non-partisan, as it is open to all parties irrespective of political opinions.
The president of Aka-Ikenga, Chief Chris Asoluka, said in Lagos at the weekend that the retreat will not be "a forum for bellyaching or grandstanding", rather it will be a session of analysis of issues and midwifing of the ideas that will lead to the structuring of a "practical and selfless road map".
Asoluka said: "It is a unique opportunity to think through the peculiar intra-ethnic dynamics propelling Ndigbo and then discuss how they fit into the Igbo road map and the challenge of remaining a relevant constituency of the federating units of 21st century Nigeria.
"After the Igbo Day on September 29, this is a deliberate effort by Igbo to take stock of their realities, how far they have gone and what steps to take. It is a moment for reflection.
"Asaba is a deliberate choice because it offers the forum for a total reconciliation with the Igbo elsewhere in the country and in the Diaspora. We want to say that the Igbo are equal, irrespective of geographical location.
"From the theme Njikoka, unity is superior, we want to say that there is need for a paradigm shift in the way we have been doing things. We want to take a sample of our leaders and create the platform so that we can begin to reason together".
Expected at the retreat are state governors, the Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, members of the National Assembly, prominent Igbo professionals, politicians and political appointees.
Professor Berth Nnaji will present the keynote address at the two-day event.
