From Farouk AdamU Yakasai, Gusau
AS tongs continued to wag, on who will produce
Nigerias next president, there is strong indication that the northern
political class have closed ranks towards producing a common candidate
irrespective of his party linen.
Dropping this hint at a parley with newsmen in
Gusau, the Zamfara state Governor, Alhaji Ahmad Sani, said both the All
Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the
north have struck alliance to back a common presidential candidate in 2007.
However, what is yet known, is whether any
among the army of the present contenders from the region, is among the
consensus candidate.
Governor Sani explained, that it had become
necessary for all of them to put their political differences aside and come
together towards producing the next president from the north.
"The 2007 presidential election will be a
different political arrangement as there is nothing stopping me while I am
in ANPP, supporting a candidate of PDP if the northern Nigerian people met
and said this is our candidate."
He recalled that the ANPP in 1999 formed an
alliance with the AD "and was now proposing that of the PDP as a political
party should field a northerner, they see no reason why ANPP should field a
candidate."
Governor sani, however stated that their party
(ANPP) was ready to sponsor a presidential candidate from the region if the
PDP sponsors Southerner.
According to him, the aim of sponsoring a
consensus candidate from the north, was to enhance, and revive the northern
unity and therefore called on all and sundry to give their total support and
cooperation in order to realize the set goal.
"It is time for the north come 2007, to produce the number one
citizen of the country, as their counterparts (South) produced president who
is ruling the country for eight years," we believe that we should support
one northern candidate Governor Sani maintained.
