By Albert Akpor
Wednesday, September 01, 2004

LAGOS—A gang of armed robbers weekend attacked a police officer attached to Force CID Adeniji Adele Lagos  dispossessing him of his Scorpion riffle with twenty rounds of ammunition and a cash sum of N50, 000. (fifty thousand naira  only).

Dependable police sources said the officer identified as Corporal Abraham Ajani with Force number 110390 was standing at  Ojota-Ogudu Ori-Oke expressway when the hoodlums numbering about six and armed to the teeth who reports said had been  trailing him suddenly swooped on him.

He was said to have been given the beating of his life after his riffle with  20 rounds of ammunition was snatched away from him.   Sources further said the policeman described as a gallant officer gave the hoodlums a good fight but was overpowered as a  result of the injuries sustained while struggling with them.

Lagos state police public relations officer Mr. Emmanuel Ihgodalo when contacted said he was yet to be briefed of the incident  adding, “I am not aware of the attack yet, are you sure it happened?  Anyway, let me find out and get back to you please.”    However a source at the Area H Command Headquarters Ogudu where the incident is presently being investigated said the  victim was presently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital in the area.

“The incident you are talking about if it is the one I know, I am sure happened on August 28, 2004 at 0100hrs when about four  armed men attacked and robbed F\N 110390 cpl Abraham Ajani attached to Force CID (SARS) Adeniji Adele at Ojota  Ogudu Ori-Oke express road of the sum of N50,000.00 and one scorpion riffle with twenty rounds of ammunition.

From investigation the officer was on duty with other colleagues but walked a little distant from them when he eventually fell  victim.  He sustained injuries in the encounter and is now responding to treatment at the hospital.  We are investigating the attack  with a view to bringing those behind the incident to book.”

In another development, a commercial bus driver simply identified as Dauda was shot and wounded in his right leg on Saturday  at Ladipo area of Lagos for refusing to part with an undisclosed sum demanded of him.

The police officer who was responsible for the shooting incident identified as Corporal Bolarinwa Ojo attached to Police Mobile  Force PMF 23 Lagos was on guard duty at Diamond Bank Ladipo Branch when the incident occurred.

The victim is said to be responding to treatment at Isolo General Hospital were doctors are said to be battling to extract some of  the pellets lodged in his right leg.  The incident is said to be under intense investigation at Mushin Division.
