Gani urges TUC to reject new labour bill

By Augustine Nsudeh and Margaret Odeyemi
Wednesday, September 01, 2004

LAGOS—HUMAN Rights Activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) yesterday said President  Olusegun  Obasanjo’s plan to deregister the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), was on account of labour’s persistent challenges  to his incessant hike in the pump prices of petroleum products.

Chief Fawehinmi who spoke at the launch of a book “Nigeria: Freedom of Association and the Trade Unions Act; A Critical  Analysis (including appraisal of the executive bill to amend the trade unions act,) asked the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria  (TUC) to reject the bill otherwise it would be the next victim.

According to him, “NLC fighting over fuel increase brought about the obnoxious bill with many sections which are considered  illegal and unconstitutional. Obasanjo has said he will crush NLC as he did to ASUU. We need a comprehensive review of the  labour law in this country, because that act is vindictive, undemocratic and aimed at clipping the wings of NLC.”

While reviewing the 117 page book, the two reviewers Managing Editor of ThisDay Newspapers, Mr. Kayode Komolafe and  Dr. Funmi Adewunmi, commended the efforts of the authors, and described the book as timely and a well researched  publication. In his own review, Mr. Komolafe described the book as “A genuine defence of workers' interest, while Dr.  Adewunmi called it "From military despotism to civilian authoritarianism: The plight of Nigeria".

In his welcome address National President of the Food, Beverages and Tobacco, Senior Staff Association  (FOBTOB),   Comrade Gabriel Babalolo said the book “is meant to contribute to the on-going debate for a comprehensive review of the  undemocratic and archaic labour laws in the country.
