LAGOS— THE Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Israel Ajao yesterday decried what he described as destructive criticism of the Nigeria Police by members of the public, saying that the nation would not move forward if it continued.
Ajao made this assertion while commissioning a new building erected by the Isolo branch of the Police/Community Relations Committee(PCRC) to house staff of the division whose building was burnt some years back.
The CP who pointed out that the work of policing any given community would be made easier if only members of the community worked hand-in-hand with the Police by giving useful information that would facilitate the arrest of criminals, said policing should not be seen as the sole responsibility of the Police alone.
According to him: “Our work is not done in the dark. We are exposed to members of the public and should thus be given useful information that would help us in carrying out our constitutional duty.
We need your help and not any destructive criticism. There is hardly any day that illegal arms and ammunition are not recovered from robbery suspects. Thus we want a reciprocal appreciation from members of the public, for destructive criticism will not move us ahead.”
He however commended the Isolo branch of the PCRC for constructing such edifice for the division, even as he enjoined other branches to emulate such act, saying that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibilities of the Police.
Earlier in his welcome address, chairman of the committee, Mr Ben Ohiku who said that the major function of the Police was the maintenance of law and order in the society, however, regretted that this function was threatened in the area when the Isolo divisional headquarters went up in flames and had to be moved to the Police Post at Ugali street in Ire-Akari estate, Isolo, thereby resulting in the drastic reduction of office space which he said hampered the ability of police to fight or reduce crime in the area.
