ABUJA—The Obasanjo-Atiku Success Movement (OASM) says it has not decided to support any presidential aspirants for the 2007 presidential elections, but would rather concentrate and support the efforts of the present administration to revamp the national economy and create a solid foundation for national development.
It however resolved to upgrade its activities from that of mere support for political issues to that of an active participation in the economy and encouragement of unemployed youths to engage in large scale farming, and formation of various cooperative groups that would ensure positive development of the country.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja yesterday, the National President of the OASM, Comrade Hassan Umoru disclosed that the group’’s position was in line with the PDP top hierarchy directive suspending all political activities ahead of 2007.
He said “we, as a movement, have resolved to actively engage in wealth creation, employment generation and ethical revolution in our great country”, adding “this ideological and philosophical change of direction will find expression in the encouragement of our youths to engage in large scale farming and formation of various cooperative groups”.
Comrade Umoru further stated that the new initiatives also would cover the initiation of conflict resolution mechanisms that will necessitate the involvement group in bringing feuding segments of the nation to the negotiation table. He said the movement would also champion the creation of an informal nation-wide security network that will serve as a veritable partnership to the Nigeria police force in the newly introduced Community Policing.
Against this backdrop, he further explained that “the Obasanjo-Atiku Success movement has since August 2003 been preparing for an international investment forum tagged “Investment opportunities in developing democracies-Nigeria, a test case”, saying, “the preparation has led to my visiting several embassies with other members of the movement in order to sensitize the international community on the uniqueness and viability of the international investment forum/exhibition”
Comrade Umoru noted that the forum would open up Nigeria to lucrative investment ventures by multinational corporations and international investment agencies.
On the recent controversy generated by the changing of the movement to Buba-Marwa Success Movement (B-MASM), and its subsequent suspension, Comrade Umoru hinted that six members of the movement have been expelled following their opposition to return the movement to status quo ante, accusing them of nursing intention to form a parallel organization outside the ambit of the OASM.
He disclosed that the OASM has formally communicated with the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun to recover all its property in the possession of the expelled members whom includes Deacon Gabriel Oladipo, Chief John-Bright Okoronkwo, Elder Chris Eluemuno, Mrs. F.A Oyebanjo, Barrister Musa Abubakar and Mr. Tony Anioke.
