JOS — PLATEAU State Administrator, Major General Chris Alli (RTD) has decried the hypocrisy among adherents of various religions whom he said were eager to have a good relationship with God but continue to nurse grudges against fellow Nigerians.Receiving members of the Christian Pilgrims Committee in the state to screen intending pilgrims from the state, he said it was an irony that the same people who performed holy pilgrimages to various holy lands returned to fight their neighbours. He said people must begin to practice the religious piety they exhibit through such religious exercises by living in peace with their fellow Nigerians adding that it was not enough to seek spiritual connection with God while ignoring good relationship with other people.
General Alli therefore urged adherents of various religions to look at the matter critically and resolveto live in peace with other Nigerians no matter their religious differences. He counseled that pilgrimages should be used to preach peaceful co-existence to people to make them cultivate better relationship withtheir neighbours. He described the holy pilgrimage as of utmost importance to the people of the state because of the spiritual upliftment it provides which he said explains why government continues to sponsor people to the different holy lands.
However, he said the state government would not sponsor more than 400 people for this year’s Christianpilgrimage as a result of its lean resources.Earlier, leader of the team, Chief James Kotuga said the committee is embarking on a nationwide screening and enlightenment exercise towards making those who perform the pilgrimage better Christians as well asreduce to the barest minimum cases of people absconding during the exercise. He said the screening exercise was to ensure that only those who see the pilgrimage as a spiritual exercise perform the pilgrimage and not those who see it as a mere jamboree or expedition.
