JOS— EFFORTS by the Plateau State Government to recover illegal weapons in the hands of people as a strategy for ending violent skirmishes in the state have started paying off with the arrest of 15 suspects from whom 75 live ammunitions were recovered.
The recovery was made in the southern axis of the state under the “cordon and search operation” approved by the state government last week which empowers security agents to storm and search any place arms and ammunition are suspected to be stored. The state Police Commissioner, Mr Joseph Apapa who confirmed the arrests to journalists Tuesday said some of the ammunitions were found concealed in the roof of houses. But no gun was recovered.
He said the search operation would be pursued with vigour to ensure that arms and ammunition in wrong hands were recovered to check further violence in the state. It was learnt that the operation which led to the recovery of the ammunition followed intelligencereports that some people were still stockpiling ammunition despite appeals from government for those in possession of illegal arms to turn them in.During the operation which covered Langtang North, Shendam, Mikang and Qua’an Pan local government areas and reportedly lasted several hours, houses and vehicles were thoroughly searched before the recoveries were made. The state government had last week announced that a cordon and search operation would commence following the expiration of the deadline given to people to surrender ammunition in exchange for cash rewards. The government statement signed by Director of Press Affairs in the Administrator’s Office, Mr. EzekielDalyop said the operation would take place simultaneously all over the state in pursuance of government’s desire to rid the state of illegal arms. It assured that security agents would be civil in their dealings with people during the exercise.
