ONITSHA (ANAMBRA)— THE university town of Nsukka, Anambra State, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police Mr Tafa Balogun, over the “persistent siege” by armed robbers. Dr Boniface Omeke and Mr Eugene Ugwuattah, the Chairman and Secretary of the Onitsha branch of the Nsukka Improvement Association, told newsmen that they suspected “an unholy alliance” between the criminals and the police. “Many families in Nsukka and environs have been thrown into perpetual pain, as their loved ones have either been maimed or killed,” Omeke said. According to him, “people hardly sleep in Nsukka now, night life has virtually disappeared, while those living outside hardly come back home for fear of being attacked.”
Omeke recalled that the First Bank branch at Eha-Alumone, a suburb of Nsukka, was robbed in June. He said: “The robbers who came at about 10.00 a.m. had to go to Nsukka to pick the bank manager, the accountant and the secretary who live in different locations of the town.
“They were then compelled to open the bank vault from where money was carted away by the robbers unchallenged. “They also invaded and robbed traders at the Nsukka main market.”
The association chairman claimed that the residents alerted the police but they failed to respond.
Omeke went on to say that between July and early August, cross-town robberies were carried out from Ibagwa-Aka to Nsukka town, including the houses of a royal father and the proprietors of fuel stations.
“These are just a few robbery incidents; there are countless other robberies that are still taking place even as at the time of this petition,” he stated.
“Unfortunately, the Enugu state police command, the Nsukka area commander and the divisional police station have failed to respond positively. “It is disturbing to hear allegations that the police in Nsukka dine and wine with these robbers.” Omeke called for the immediate removal of the Nsukka Area Police Commander.
