Edo PDP may recall Oyofo
By VINCENT ADEKOYA
EDO North
Senatorial district of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may recall the
embattled former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Victor Oyofo over some
unresolved intra-party crisis within the district.
Sources within the party told Daily
Champion in Benin that chieftains of the party in the district have started
shopping for his replacement.
It would be recalled that tension had
continued to mount within the senatorial district since the past few weeks over
plans by some political office holders to hijack the leadership of the party.
Precisely, while about 10 PDP members
within Edo North senatorial district, last week adopted Senator Oyofo as the new
leader in what looked like another civilian coup, majority of other members rose
from their senatorial district meeting last Saturday condemning the action.
A communique issued at the end of the
meeting held at the home of a PDP leader in the district Alhaji Inu Umoru, at
Warrake, Owan East local government, condemned the action of Senator Oyofo and
his supporters.
The statement said, "The meeting condemned
the campaign of calumny being waged by some misguided elements, mischief makers
and enemies of Edo North people to portray Edo North as disunited and incapable
of playing leadership role in Edo State come 2007.
"The meeting condemned the failed attempt
by Chief Victor Kassim Oyofo, former Chief Whip of the Senate who represents Edo
North Senatorial district in the Senate to usurp the leadership of Edo North.
"The meeting advised Senator Oyofo to
humble himself and respect the leadership of Alhaji Inu Umoru at this critical
stage of our history to enable us achieve the wishes and aspirations of the
people of Edo North".
Sources at the meeting which was attended
by over 400 members which including past deputy governors, Senators, members of
the National and State House of Assembly, commissioners and local government
chairmen, disclosed that immediately after the meeting, the leadership of the
party in the district commenced the process that may lead to recalling Senator
Oyofo.
Reports said a former senatorial aspirant
in the district (names withheld) may have been penciled down for the plum job.
It would be recalled that Senator Oyofo was last week
removed as Senate Chief Whip and leader of the South-South caucus.
