Obasanjo, Compaore Discuss Poverty in Africa From Josephine Lohor in Abuja President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday met for over two hours with the President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaore, at the Presidential Chalet of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The meeting centered on job creation, the reduction of poverty in Africa and the Sudanese Peace Talks in Abuja. The visiting President also briefed Obasanjo on preparations for the World Conference on Employment Generation and Poverty Alleviation holding next week in Ouagadougou, the Burkinabe capital. Obasanjo, who will chair the conference, said, "we in Africa see this conference as very important because majority of our people in the world are in Africa." He also said the discussion between them also centered on what should be done and how the programmes would be implemented "to move us out of the cycle of poverty." Obasanjo seized the opportunity of the Burkinabe President's visit to brief him on the current peace talks in Abuja on Darfur between the Sudanese Government, the Justice and Equity Movement (JEM), and Sudanese Liberation Movement Army (SMLA). Compaore said "African leaders must ensure that our people are employed and have money." He congratulated Obasanjo on his election as Chairman of the African Union (AU), and his efforts to bring peace in Sudan, adding that he looks forward to receiving the Nigerian leader for the summit.
