'Why Election Malpractices Increase' From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja Exam Ethics Project (EEP) has said analysis of statistics of examination malpractices has indicated that irregularities increase every election year hence the need to discourage politicians from using teachers to falsify election results and students as thugs. It has also suggested that henceforth those caught in examination malpractice should be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigations and prosecution. EEP Chairman, Mr. Ike Onyechere said about N50 billion has been lost to exam malpractice by government, parents and other stakeholders as a result of calculation, reprinting and other expenses arising from what he called the cankerworm. Onyechere said each year, the five major public examination bodies cancel hundreds of thousands of results and report thousands of invigilators, supervisors, teachers and principals to various state governments, yet nothing happens. He said a recent retreat organised by EEP has resolved that examination fraud falls within the ambit of financial and economic crimes and that exam fraudsters should also be reported to EFCC. "Statistics justifies this position, in the 10-year period between 1994 and 2004, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) cancelled 798,5000 results for May/June examinations alone.
