Construction of Rivers Refinery Soon From Donald Andoor in Port Harcourt Construction on the N277 million Rivers refinery, Rivgas Refinery and Petrochemicals will commence before the end of this year. State Energy and Natural Resources Commissioner, Engineer Ndubuisi Nwankwo announced this yesterday at a press conference in his office. Nwankwo declaration is comming on the heels of the invitation for pre-qualification applications from reputable companies in the petroleum and allied sector to tender for the scope of work. He observed that, the state government was working within the time frame for the commencement of the actual construction work adding that "once the bids for the tenders are opened in September, contracts will immediately be awarded to successful applicants who will be expected to start contruction work in December." The Commissioner explained that the state government had already opened discussions with the equipment manufacturers for the project and that the state technical partners of the project from the United States who have agreed to come in with 70 percent funding while the state would complete the remaining 30 percent were invited to be part of the biding process. The refinrey, a modified modular plant with the latest technology, according to the commissioner would be completed in 2006. It is an integrated plant made up of, methanol, ethanol, urea and ammonia units with the capacity to refine 30,000 barrels of petroleum per day, 5,000 metric tonnes of methanol per day and 1,500 metric tonnes of urea and ammonia brand of fertilizers per day.
