IG Commended over SARS Disbandment By Yomi Akinsuyi Centre for Community Education and Empow-erment, (CE&E;) has commended Tafa Balogun the Police Inspector-General for the rare courage he displayed by disbanding the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). A press statement signed by the grooups exzecutives Director Funsho Omogbehin, and made available to THISDAY, said the development, though overdue, was well-received adding that it owuld bring sanity to the force. Balogun had, on August 28, disbanded the special Anti-Robbery Squad due to nation wide complaints. The group said teh conducts and operation of the squad were characterised by unwholesome pratices like extra-judicial killings, extortion, brutality torture of suspects and sometimes, outright summary execution of awaiting trial suspects. 'The IGP has also shown by tjis decision, that the emerging Nigeria Police Force is sensitive to public opinion ; responsive to their legitimate concerns and expectation, the statement said. CE&Ehowever;, cautioned that the disbandment should nt be the end of reforms to transform the force into a truly respoonsive and accountable public institution that would command the respect of Nigerian.
