Customs Destroys N20m Frozen Turkey, Chicken By Francis Ugwoke About 1,900 cartons of banned frozen poultry products valued at N20 million were, yesterday, destroyed by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos. The goods and the owner were arrested Sunday around 1.20am at Benin/Ore Road by the anti-smuggling unit of the Customs Federal Operations. Comptroller, Federal Operations, Mr. Umar Daura, told newsmen that the items, chicken and turkey, were covered on board a trailer to deceive the Customs and other government agencies that the goods were cement consignments. But he said luck ran out for the owners of the goods when his men on a tip off, arrested the trailer. "The seizure is unique not because this Command has never made a seizure of this nature but because of the tactics adopted by these daring smugglers to deceive my agile and well-focused officers into believing that their vehicle was carrying bags of cement. The cartons of frozen turkey were neatly and expertly loaded in a flat decked cementcarrying trailer. They failed in their antics, as my ever-alert officers foiled their strategy", he said. Daura disclosed that a lady suspect has been kept in custody, adding that she is undergoing interrogation and may soon be taken to court . He told newsmen that his command has stationed some officers to provide security for the frozen poultry products already destroyed to prevent some individuals from tampering with the items. Daura explained that his men had in the past caught people who attempted to dig the spot where similar items were buried. The Comptroller warned smugglers to either desist from what he described as economic crime or continue to suffer the full weight of the law.
