FG Plans Centres of Excellence By Tayo Ajakaye The federal government is to establish Centres of Excellence and Research & Development Centres across the country to facilitate Information Technology development, the Minister of Science & Technology, Prof. Turner Isoun has said. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Software Development Task Force in Abuja, Isoun said the needs assessment for the Centres has been completed and that government would soon establish the first three of the Centres in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. The Lagos center would become operational before the end of this year while the Abuja and Port Harcourt centers would become operational next year. The Minister said that government is now paying more than a passing attention to ICT in the public sector. �Unlike in the recent past, IT now receives more than passing attention in most government ministries and departments,� he stated adding that in just three years, so many IT related programmes and projects have been initiated in the public sector to the extent that government has had to institute an audit and harmonization of all IT projects in the sector. �I can now proudly say that many sectors in the public domain are sufficiently enlightened to begin a systematic implementation of other aspects of the policy relevant to them,� the Minister said.
