Lawmaker Decries Ecological Funds' Use From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Environment, Hon Emeka Atuma has decried the unproductive use of huge ecological expenditure by government to solve ecological problems in the country.He also as condemned lack of standard response system by government to contain the problems. According to the lawmaker, flood disasters, in parts claimed many of Delta, Gombe and Ebonyi states, which claimed many several lives, would have been avoidable if there was articulated rapid response system by government. To achieve better results, the lawmaker believed that an "innovative funding mechanism" for the disbursement of ecological funds should be adopted to proper application of funds for such projects. To him, the starting point would be for state governments to account for the money given to them for ecological purposes, by stating the areas affected stages of such interventions, expected duration and cost of such interventions. "This will assist the citizens o assess performance and management of this fund and holding its administrators accountable where necessary. This has become imperative given the fact that a tour of most of the frightening ecological sites revealed that rate of attention appears infinitesimal given the whopping sums set aside annually for ecological menace", he noted. Atuma called on state and Federal Governments to be more sensitive to environmental issues to achieve harmony between expenditure on ecological problems and help create positive environmental behaviours and practices.
