Coup Allegation: Gaddaffi Seeks Obasanjo's Intervention By Abimbola Akosile Libya has appealed to the Chairman of African Union (AU), President Olusegun Obasanjo, to investigate the allegation levelled by Mauritania accusing Libya of involvement in an attempted coup about two weeks ago in Mauritania. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mrs. Oluremi Oyo, briefing newsmen yesterday in Abuja on the issue, explained that Libya was concerned about the allegation resulting in President Muammar Gaddafi sending a special envoy, Mr. Gumar Ahmed to seek intervention of the AU Chairman. "He (Gaddafi) denied categorically the involvement of Libya in any such putsch. The Libyan leader also claimed he trusted in the capacity of the President to solve this small crisis that impinges on African solidarity. He also advised Obasanjo to institute an investigation into the allegations, to which the President accepted". She claimed it was Libya's understanding that Mauritania had levelled the allegation against it formally through the media and, "all that they are asking for in the interest of peace is that Obasanjo should look into this". The AU Chairman also received an update on the on-going Sudanese peace talks over the Darfur crisis, especially the commitment of the parties to resolve the crises.
