Pay Cut: Varsity Senior Staff Down Tools From Ademola Adeyemo in Ibadan Senior staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) yesterday directed its members to embark on a two day warning strike to protest the persistent shortfall in personel emoluments and subventions in the universities. the senior staff working in the universities, teaching hospitals and research institutions said the shortfall in the subvention had resulted in the payment of one quarter or half salaries to the members of the union in the last six months with attendant effect on the welfare of the families of the members of the union. The union, in a release signed by the Acting Secretary Mr M.O. Akinade, demanded the payment of outstanding arrears of 22 per cent increase on HATTIS IV including May to December 2001. Also, it demanded that the university commission should act on the complaints of the union on the approved conditions/scheme of service for the research institutions, federal colleges of agriculure and allied institutions. Beside, the union want the commission to implement the agreement signed with the union in the year 2001 on the terminal salaries for principal officers and other professionals. "Government should also implement its monetisation policy in educational institutions, teaching/specialist hospitals and other federal research schools. The union accused the Federal Government of "non-challant attitude" to the welfare of its members concerning the grievances.
