Adamu Lauds FG on Solid Minerals Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Adamu, has commended the Federal Government for its initiatives on solid minerals. Adamu decried the country's over dependence on oil, warning of the dangers of a monoculture economy. A press statement by state Senior Special Assistant (Media), Victoria N. Ikeano, said Adamu commended the Federal Government's contract award for an airborne geological survey, to gather data on the country's solid minerals, plans for establishment of a Centre for Solid Minerals and sourcing of funds from bilateral and multilateral donor agencies for development of the sub-sector. Exchanging views with Solid Minerals Minister, Elder Odion Ugbese, who was on a working visit to the state, Adamu described the initiatives as cheering for the sub-sector, which had been neglected for decades. He lauded the ban on importation of barytes, noting that the state alone has enough baryte deposits to meet local demands. On the Delta prospecting plant located on the outskirts of Lafia, which barely functioned after its commissioning in 1998, he welcomed the Federal Government's plans to rescuscitate it, advising exploitation of the nation's coal resources, which abounds in the state, as alternative energy use, to stem deforestation. Known as the land of solid minerals, the state is blessed with abundant solid minerals, among them barytes, coal, gemstone, tantalite, topaz, kaolin and quatz.
