Mediation Centre Settles 7,000 Disputes By Akpan Unyime Citizens Mediation Centre in Lagos has said it settled 7,000 disputes in the first half of the year. Assistant Director of the Centre, Mrs Idowu Alakija, said this at the Alausa office of the centre, adding that the centre has 21 mediators, all of whom are legal practitioners and members of the Institute of Chartered Mediation, adding that they are all seasoned mediators and veterans in their respective fields. She said since the centre was established in 1999 by the Bola Tinubu administration, it had been involved in mediatory activities, conflict resolution and amicable settlement of disputes. Cases handled by the centre include, landlord/tenants, separation/divorce, child custody, employer/employee and land matters. While thanking the state government for its support, Alakija said it would soon establish offices in all the local government areas of the state. She disclosed that the centre has offices in Folawewo Street, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja; Crusader House, Sabo, Yaba; King George IV road, Onikan; and Ikorodu, adding that the offices are not enough to handle the large number of cases the centre receives weekly. The Centre is a unit under the Directorate of Citizens' Right, a department of the Ministry of Justice. other units under the directorate include the Human Rights Protection Unit, the Office of the Public Defender, The Consumer Protection Unit and Justice, now Publication Unit.
