Okija: Aka-Ikenga, Afenifere Commend Police
Lagos
By Eugene Agha

Weeks after police raided the Ogwugwu shrine in Awka, Anambra State, and allegedly recovered about 50 human carcasses in various stages of decomposition, encomiums have continued to pour in for the police over its handling of the Okija Shrine episode.

The Aka-Ikenga, a group of Igbo professionals from both within and outside the eastern part of the country, described the episode as a criminal development, which should be thoroughly investigated.

According to the group, such a thing was out of place in a modern society and as such, the police should prosecute anyone found culpable.

"We condemn in strong terms, the criminal activities embarked upon by all those arrested at the Arusi Okija Shrine, and we say they should be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others who may be doing the same thing in other parts of the country" the group said.

In the same vein, the Pan Yoruba Socio-Cultural Organi-sation; Afenifere, implore the police to extend the raid to all other shrines in the country.

The group said they would want to encouraged the Inspector General of Police, Mr Tafa Balogun, to make good his threat to raid all such shrines wherever they exist.

Afenifere said activities of all those involved in the brutal murder of innocent Nigerians portray the country as a nation involved in cannibalism.

Various commentators and human rights organisations support the raiding of the shrine, describing it as an act of courage that should be commended.

"It is a shame that in 21st century Nigeria, an archaic system, reminiscent of cannibalism and human sacrifice exists. The storming of the shrine is a rare act of bravery by the police. We condemn in strong terms any parallel justice system in the country", the groups added in separate reactions.

The Centre for Freedom, however singled out Balogun for praise.

Balogun, the Human rights group stated, has once again showed that human rights violation was an anathema by his personal involvement in the bursting of the Okija Shrine.
