Military Apologists Threaten Democracy -Edo Speaker
From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City
The presence of "military apologists" among the present crop of leaders in the country has been identified as one of the greatest threats to the sustenance of democratic culture in Nigeria.
The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. David Iyoha, expressed this view when he paid an official visit to the headquarters of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) in Benin-City.
Iyoha said he was impressed by the efforts of ANEEJ in working towards bettering the welfare of citizens in developing countries and putting pressure on developed nations to embrace a new world order that would accommodate poorer people.
He observed that the many "military apologists" who are leaders today appear ready to sink the national democratic ship so long as their narrow personal interests were served, but stressed the need for the "leaders to honestly and sincerely work to bequeath worthy legacies."
The speaker, who was accompanied on the visit by his deputy, Hon. Omon Ezomo, plegded his "determination to be remembered on the positive side of history."
"We are living witnesses to recent political and historical development in this country" Iyoha noted, adding, "Abiola and Abacha both died and history has recorded that; but which of them would be remembered on the positive side of history?"
Earlier, the president of ANEEJ, Rev. David Ugolor, pledged the willingness of his group to provide the funds and capacity building resources that would enable members of the Edo State legislature to prepare a scheme for the utilization of the state's oil revenue, including a working visit to Ondo State where a similar scheme is already in place.
Ugolor also presented copies of the book published by ANEEJ, "The Poverty of Oil Wealth in the Niger-Delta,"to the House Speaker.
