2007: PDP Vows to Win Lagos
By Akpan Unyime
The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has restated its determination to win Lagos State in 2007.
Speaking with newsmen at the party's secretariat in Ikeja on the occasion of the formal acceptance of decampees from the rival party, Alliance for Democracy (AD), the Chairman of the Mobilisation Committee, Chief Lanre Rasaq, noted that the PDP has embarked on monitoring activities of the incumbent administration in Lagos towards taking advantage of its weak points.
While pointing that the present Governor Bola Tinubu-led government in the state has failed Lagosians, Rasaq said what took place at the party's secretariat is a pointer to the fact that PDP is determined to win Lagos State in 2007. He added that the decampees who have pledged their loyalty to PDP will contribute immensely to winning the state in 2007.
Also speaking at the occasion, the chairman of the party in Lagos State, Alhaji Murtala Ashorobi explained that the party is poised to cross the hurdles that hindered it from winning the state during the last elections.
He, however, urged members to eschew bitterness that is capable of destroying the ultimate goal of the party winning in Lagos. "We should work together with love to win Lagos State. We should use our being big to our advantage," he said.
Welcoming the decampees from rival party, AD, in the state, Ashorobi said it is a sign of new things to come in the party, stressing that PDP has started to march towards occupying the seat of power in 2007.
A decampee told the gathering that he decided to quit AD for PDP because the latter consists of vibrant political gurus with very sound minds, good sense of responsibilities, resources utilisation and good judgment. "This had placed the party head and shoulder above other parties," he noted.
Adeyemi, on his part, alleged that he and his supporters decided to leave AD for PDP because of neglect by the leadership of the party in the state. "We left because we have been neglected while the leadership continued to chase shadows," he said.
At the occasion, prominent PDP leaders in and out of Lagos were in attendance. They included the party's governorship candidate at the 2003 general elections, Engineer Funsho Williams, Chief Modupe Sasore, Special Adviser to President Obasanjo.
