BAT Agronomy Company Institutes Scholarship Scheme for Students As part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, British American Tobacco Iseyin Agronomy Limited (BATIA), a 100% owned subsidiary company of British American Tobacco Nigeria, has instituted a yearly scholarship scheme for the children of BATIA registered farmers. The scholarship scheme which is largeted at students in tertiary institutions above the age of 18, will entitle beneficiaries to N50,000.00 (Fifty thousand naira) per academic year of a tertiary qualification lasting up to the four years in duration, subject to scholars' good academic performance. The selection process consists of competitive assessments involving written tests and verbal interviews. Part of the selection criteria will require applicants to be the biological children of BATIA registered farmers who have secured admission or are currently enrolled in any tertiary institution, university or polytechnic, in Nigeria. BATIA was established in May, 2003. Its main objectives include total and absolute focus on leaf growing in Nigeria and the improvement of the quantity of leaf production in the country. To this end, the company provides non interest loans to farmers as well as farm inputs such as fertilizers, agro-chemicals and farm extension services.
